Lagos State First Lady Ibijoke Claudiana Sanwo-Olu has commended the Ellen Olusola Caulcrick Foundation (EOCF) for organizing a unified outdoor sports activity that brought together children with special needs and their regular peers at Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos.
Mrs Joke Sanwo-Olu graced the event on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Igbobi College’s football pitch.
She expressed her delight about the initiative, praising the EOC Foundation’s efforts in creating an avenue for children with special abilities to feel loved, cared for, and to mingle with their regular peers.
Paying tribute to the late Mrs. Ellen Olusola Caulcrick’s legacy, she recalled how the foundation continues to bring life to the vision of the late Mrs. Olusola Caulcrick, “a passionate educator and champion for individuals with disabilities.”
“While much progress has been made, we recognize that the journey towards changing societal attitudes and perceptions around individuals living with disabilities is still ongoing.”
“The unified sports initiative represents a groundbreaking opportunity for our children and youths, with and without disabilities, to come together on the same terms.”
“That is really beautiful and very much commendable.”
“It will help create friendships and mutual respect by encouraging interaction among people of all abilities.”
“We are taking meaningful strides toward a society where everyone is equally valued.”
“This gesture serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibilities to champion inclusion and advocate for the rights and wellbeing of individuals with disabilities,” she said.
In addition, while acknowledging the efforts of the EOC Foundation, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for the establishment of more special needs centers and training for parents and teachers at all levels.
Furthermore, she assured everyone that the Lagos State Government is committed to advancing the humanitarian cause of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
She noted that the Lagos State Government has supported the PWD community through the enactment of special laws for people with disabilities, as well as extending financial support to special homes and disability cluster groups through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and building capacity with private and non-governmental organizations.
She pledged that the Lagos State Government will continue to partner with NGOs such as the EOC Foundation to foster an inclusive environment where everyone, including individuals with special needs, can live with dignity and contribute to society.
