Protesters, wielding Palestinian flags and chanting slogans, converged in Malmo, denouncing the contest’s official slogan “United by music” with their own twist, “Eurovision united by genocide.”

Reflecting on the demonstration, protester Maryam emphasized the significance of standing in solidarity with the oppressed, regardless of the country involved, highlighting the plight of those impacted by occupation.

Meanwhile, amidst the spectacle of catchy tunes and flamboyant costumes, French singer Slimane interrupted his rehearsal to advocate for peace, echoing the sentiment of unity through music.

The protest landscape in Malmo witnessed diverse voices, with over 10,000 pro-Palestinian activists, including prominent figure Greta Thunberg, voicing their dissent ahead of the semi-final.

In a display of contrasting views, a smaller group of pro-Israeli supporters, including members of Malmo’s Jewish community, defended Israel’s participation, emphasizing the right of Israeli artists like Eden Golan to perform.

Critics of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) cited double standards, pointing to the ban imposed on Russia from Eurovision in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine.
