With the Gunners securing on deadline-day, the transfer of Jorginho from Chelsea as they look to provide cover for their midfield in the wake of injury to Mohamed Elneny, debate has risen of the choice of said player in Mikel Arteta’s team.
From the transfer, Arsenal will look to pay £12 million for the Italian international, who is set to sign a contract until the summer of 2024.
For Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, he sees a lot of opportunities with the transfer evident from the praise he has for the former Chelsea midfielder who he classifies as a “top signing.”
Merson believes that Jorginho’s experience and intelligence will protect Arsenal’s back four and provide crucial support to players such as Odegaard, Saka, and Martinelli.
Jorginho joins Arsenal after a successful four-and-a-half years at Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and FIFA Club World Cup.
The signing follows Arsenal’s unsuccessful attempts to secure the services of Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, who the club offered £75 million for.
Arsenal fans are divided in their reaction to the signing, but Merson is confident that Jorginho will prove to be a valuable asset to Mikel Arteta’s side, who are hoping to win their first Premier League title in 19 years.
With Jorginho’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, Arsenal’s deadline-day transfer is a smart move that is expected to bring stability and experience to the club’s midfield.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson said:
“You are buying experience as well. He has won big trophies, and he is a proper holding midfield player. You were only talking about two years ago when Chelsea won the Champions League.
“I know he is two years older, but he is so intelligent. He will protect the [Arsenal’s] back four. He will be feeding Odegaard. He will be feeding Saka and Martinelli. For me, he is a top signing, and he knows the game.”
