EKO HOT BLOG reports that Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez has reportedly expressed a desire to leave the club less than a year after his arrival, citing a lack of playing time due to the presence of prolific striker Erling Haaland.
The Spanish outlet El Chiringuito has reported that the 23-year-old forward has informed the club of his intention to leave permanently in the summer transfer window.
Alvarez was signed by Manchester City in January 2022 but spent the remainder of the season on loan at River Plate, the club he was signed from. Since his return, he has made 19 league appearances for the defending champions, but only six of those have been in the starting line-up.
This lack of first-team football has reportedly led the Argentine forward to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
Despite being a World Cup winner with Argentina and a key player in their triumph at the end of last year, Alvarez has found himself on the periphery of the Manchester City squad.
His situation is complicated by the impressive form of Haaland, who has been a prolific goalscorer since his arrival in the Premier League, amassing 27 league goals to date.
Alvarez’s desire for more playing time is understandable given his recent success on the international stage, where he was an integral part of the Argentina team that won the World Cup. However, his lack of game time at Manchester City has put his future at the club in doubt.
The club had reportedly been considering loaning Alvarez out, but he has now informed them that he wants to leave permanently. Manchester City had signed Alvarez to a five-year contract just over a year ago, but they may struggle to keep him if he is determined to leave.
Haaland’s form has been a double-edged sword for Manchester City, with his goalscoring exploits prompting accusations that the team is overly reliant on him. This has led to some pundits suggesting that City’s struggles in the league this season are due to their failure to play as a team, rather than any individual player.
Alvarez’s potential departure would be a blow for Manchester City, who had high hopes for the young Argentine when they signed him. However, if he is not getting the playing time he desires, it may be in his best interests to seek a move elsewhere.
