Jury Awards $2.7m Damages Against Katy Perry And Label

Damages running into $2.7 million have been awarded against Katy Perry in the latest high-profile copyright scandal to rock the American music industry.

Katy Perry was sued 5 years ago by Flame, an American gospel music rapper and two co-writers who claimed that her 2013 hit, “Dark Horse” was stolen from his song titled “Joyful Noise” which was released back in 2008.

Alhough Katy Perry said she had never heard of Gray’s 2009 rap song when she took the stand in a weeklong trial, the gospel rapper’s lawyers argued for a far higher penalty of around $20 million since Katy Perry reportedly made $31m from the single, album sales and concert DVD that featured the song.

Katy Perry was ordered by the federal jury in California to pay $500,000 in damages while her label, Capitol Records, was ordered to pay $1.2 million while her producers will also pay towards the $2.78m sum.
