A mild drama played out during the repatriation flight from Dubai as the aircraft had to make an air return 60 minutes into the flight, to disembark a mother who had delivered a baby on board.

The Emirates flight EK783, a Boeing 777-300 with registration A6-EGO initially left Dubai for Lagos at around 10 am but had to return because of the incident and restart the journey.

The returnees had been scheduled to arrive at the airport at 3.00 p.m. but one of the passengers went into labour.

According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the plane had to make a U-turn to United Arab Emirate.

A press statement from NIDCOm read, “A Nigerian lady, Mrs Kafayat Amusan, one of the stranded Nigerians travellers, returning from Dubai, UAE, has been delivered of a baby boy onboard Emirates airline departing to Lagos.”

The Chairman of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Orewa, confirmed that the plane was expected to land any moment from 7 pm.

She also congratulated Amusan for another addition in her family and prayed she return safely to the country.

“She will return to Nigeria after obtaining a birth certificate and other necessary travel documents for her baby boy,” she added.

Upon their arrival, the evacuees are expected to proceed into 14-day isolation while other Nigerians are expected to be evacuated within the next few days.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, over 4,000 Nigerians are waiting to be evacuated across the world back home.
