EDITOR’S PICKS:

Earlier on Sunday, early results showed that Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was trailing Ahmadu Fintiri, the incumbent governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, later on Sunday morning, the INEC REC announced Binani of the APC as the winner of the election.

His announcement has elicited protests from members of the PDP.

Before the collation of exercise was suspended on Saturday night, results from 10 LGAs had been announced.

The collation of results of the remaining 10 LGAs was expected to commence by 11am on Sunday but Ari suddenly declared Binani the winner of the election without announcing figures, confusing observers.

Governorship election results are traditionally announced by the state returning officer.

Mele Lamido, the returning officer for the Adamawa governorship election, was not present when Ari announced the APC candidate as the winner of the election.

According to Sections 64 & 65 of the Electoral Act 2022 & Part 3 of INEC guidelines, the power to declare results rests solely on a returning officer appointed by INEC.
