“To every team and coach I have played for, to every mate I’ve played alongside, and to every opponent I have played against, thank you all for being part of this incredible journey. Thank you football, thank you Nigeria. Desire Ugochi Oparanozie.”
Oparanozie started her career at Bayelsa Queens in the Nigerian Women’s Championship and moved to Delta Queens in 2010. She then spent two months on loan at Düvenciler Lisesispor in the Turkish Women’s First Football League in 2011, before returning to Delta Queens.
She later played for Avaldsnes IL in Norway, Wuhan Jianghan University in China, and FC Fleury 92 in France.
Oparanozie was a key member of the Nigeria women’s national team, the Super Falcons, and helped them win the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations. She was also named the tournament’s top scorer.
She is one of the most decorated players in Nigerian women’s football, having won the league title in Nigeria, Norway, and China, as well as the FA Cup in England.
Oparanozie is a role model for many young girls in Nigeria and Africa, and her retirement is a major loss to the sport. However, she leaves behind a legacy of success and inspiration.
