Recall that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested Okupe earlier on Thursday while on his way to London.
In a statement, the secret police said it acted on behalf of the EFCC.
Okupe’s lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, disclosed that the DSS operatives asked the former presidential spokesman to produce evidence that the Federal High Court, Abuja, has freed him from the money laundering case in which he was convicted in December.
“The reason according to the source is that he was asked to produce evidence that the Federal High Court Abuja has freed him from the case in which he was convicted and paid a fine to the knowledge of the whole world and was allowed to go home,” the lawyer said.
A few hours later, Okupe took to his Twitter handle to announce his release.
He said senior EFCC officers in Lagos and Abuja apologised to him for the “error” of his arrest.
“I was arrested & detained @ the MMIA, Lagos this morning, 12th Jan on my way to UK for medicals; years after my passport had been withheld by the FHC Abuja,” he wrote.
