JUST IN: FG Gives Fresh Update On Twitter Ban
- The Federal Government (FG) has given a fresh update on the ban of Twitter in the country.
EKOHOTBLOG reports that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said that the Federal Government (FG) had reached agreements on seven of 10 requests made to Twitter to lift the ban on the microblogging site.
Lai Mohammed, however, said the FG was waiting for Twitter’s response on final issues, including setting up a local office, paying tax locally, and cooperating with the government to regulate content and harmful tweets.
The minister made this known in an interview with Reuters in the United States on Thursday.
Mohammed, who disclosed that the FG expects to lift its ban on Twitter before the end of 2021, added that the government was awaiting a response on three final requests made of the social media platform.
“We certainly want to put this behind us before the end of the year,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, Twitter has declined to comment on the latest development.
EKOHOTBLOG reports that the Federal Government suspended Twitter on June 4, 2021, after it removed a post from President Muhammadu Buhari that threatened to punish regional secessionists.

FG had suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria, citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.
However, Lai Mohammed said Twitter “made their platform the platform of choice for separatists”, and was suspended because it threatened national unity.
Last month, Nigeria’s broadcasting regulator asked TV stations to curb their reporting of security issues in the country by withholding details of incidents and victims.
Mohammed added that concerns over deteriorating freedom of speech were the result of misinformation.
He further stated that he was currently in Washington, D.C. meeting with journalists and opinion leaders in an effort to counter such misunderstandings.
