FG Suspends Train Operations Along Warri-Itakpe Route

  • An Itakpe-bound train from Warri derailed on Sunday afternoon.

  • The Nigerian Railway Corporation said the passengers and crew were safely evacuated without incident.

  • The corporation suspended operations on the Warri-Itakpe rail line as it probed the derailment.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Federal Government has announced the suspension of Warri-Itakpe train services.

The government, through the Nigerian Railway Corporation, made the announcement on Sunday night.

The announcement comes hours after the Warri-Itakpe Train WITS 01 derailed at km 30 Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track at about 12:30pm on Sunday.

In a terse statement, the train service’s coordinator, Sanni Abdulganiyu, said the service along the Warri-Itakpe corridor had been suspended.

He noted that all the 148 passengers and 30 crew members aboard the derailed train were evacuated safely and successfully.

Abdulganiyu added that the NRC was yet to ascertain the cause of the train’s derailment.

“The Warri-Itakpe train service WITS 01 derailed at kilometre 30 Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track at about 12:30hrs of January 22, 2023,” the statement reads.

“Thankfully, there was no fatality and no casualty. We were immediately alerted and security personnel comprising the; Army, Police, NSCDC, and the community vigilante were immediately drafted to the accident point with the assistance of the Local government chairman.

“All the 148 passengers and 30 crew members were evacuated to a safe place and arrangements were made to convey 148 passengers to their various destinations and they have been successfully conveyed.

“The cause of the derailment is not yet determined. Due to this incident, the service along the corridor has been suspended. Further details would be communicated to members of the public.
