EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigeria’s Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has been suspended for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone. The decision was taken following his second booking in the qualifying series, against Guinea-Bissau on Monday night.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper was booked for time-wasting towards the end of the game, which the Super Eagles won 1-0 to avenge their earlier loss to the Djurtus.
Francis Uzoho had previously received a yellow card for a similar offence in the qualifiers against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in Abuja. As a result, he will miss the crucial away match against Sierra Leone in June, where a win or a draw will be enough for the Super Eagles to secure a berth at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire.
The suspension of Uzoho comes at a time when the Nigerian goalie has faced criticism for his performances in goal for the Super Eagles. The Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper has made several crucial saves for the team in previous matches but has also made errors that have cost the team points.
With Uzoho unavailable, the Nigerian national football team will have to find a suitable replacement to create some stability and consistency to help the Super Eagles secure their place in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The match against Sierra Leone is set to take place on Sunday, June 11, 2023, and the Super Eagles will be looking to put in a strong performance without their suspended goalkeeper.
