Eko Hot Blog reports that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has appointed CP Olatunji Disu, as the new Commissioner for Police in Rivers State.
His appointment was contained in a signal dispatched on Wednesday.
The IGP said Disu, who was his Principal Staff Officer (PSO) before the latest appointment, was tapped to oversee the Rivers police command to ensure efficiency in the policing system across the state.
The police boss also appointed over seven others to lead different state commands as part of the ongoing measures towards strengthening security, tackling violent crimes, and enhancing optimal coordination of policing operations across Nigeria.
The new CPs appointed and redeployed include CP George Chuku as commissioner for BNS Command, CP Ahmed Tijani to Jigawa Command, CP Dan Shawulu to Niger Command, CP Usman Hayatu to GBS Command, CP Danjuma Aboki to IMS Command, and CP Isyaku Muhammed to OSS Command.
The appointments and redeployments of Disu and other new commissioners are with immediate effect.
IGP Egbetokun charged the CPs to demonstrate their professional competence in the new offices they have been picked to lead across the country.
Meanwhile, the new Rivers CP is replacing CP Nwonyi Emeka, barely three days after youths in the state protested and demanded Emeka’s redeployment, following reports that some police officers threatened to kill the State Governor, Siminalaye Fubara, and shot at him when he went to assess the extent of damage done to the state House of Assembly chambers which got burnt overnight.
Disu’s new appointment came barely seven months after he was promoted alongside 32 others from the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to Commissioner of Police (CP) and was subsequently appointed by the IGP as his PSO, leading and coordinating the security team attached to the police chief’s office and others.
Before now, the new Rivers police boss was the DCP, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja, and previously served at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for Rivers Command as the Deputy Head of the Unit.
Before Disu’s promotion to the rank of commissioner in March 2023, former IGP Alkali Baba appointed him as commander of the influential Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in August 2021.
He is known for transforming the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos State after his appointment in June 2015. The squad helped stem insecurity in the state while maintaining a cordial relationship with the public.
The new Rivers police commissioner holds a B.A English (Education), PGD International Relations and Strategic Studies, MSc. Public Administration, Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation & Criminal Intelligence and MSc. Criminology, Security & Legal Psychology.
The top police officer has attended several courses both within and outside Nigeria, and he is a member of several professional bodies including the International Academy of Forensics (IAF), National Association of Investigative Specialist, United States of America (NAIS), Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) amongst others.
