Eko Hot Blog reports that Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, has been released on bail.
He was released from the detention of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Lagos State, on Tuesday night.
His attorney, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, confirmed the development to Punch.
“Yes, Ṣeun Kuti has just was released minutes ago,” he was quoted as saying.
“His bail conditions has been perfected since last Thursday, but the police asked for an extension to remand him in their custody until today (Tuesday), to conclude investigation.”
Recall that Kuti had been in police custody for more than a week for allegedly assaulting an officer.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Chief Magistrates Court sitting in the Yaba area of Lagos failed to sit in the case against the singer.
No official reason was given for the absence of Magistrate Adeola Olatubosun who has been hearing the case but she was reportedly away attending a conference.
Kuti was brought to the magistrate court but upon learning of the absence of the magistrate, he was immediately taken to the police station at Panti.
One of his lawyers confirmed that the case has been adjourned till tomorrow, Wednesday, May 24.
His lawyers also said that they had followed the police to Panti to see how they could arrange the release of their client as the four additional days of remand granted by the court expires today.
Kuti submitted himself to the police last Monday to help with an investigation after going viral for assaulting an officer of the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos.
In a viral video, he was captured in a heated argument with the officer who was standing in the middle of a busy road.
During the altercation, Kuti was seen slapping the officer. The development has generated mixed reactions on and off social media.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, immediately ordered his arrest after the video went viral.
