JUST IN: Lawyer Reveals When Sunday Igboho Will Return To Nigeria

  • One of the lawyers of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, has revealed when his client will return to Nigeria.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that Olusegun Falola, one of the lawyers of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo well known as Sunday Igboho, has said that his client will seek asylum in the Benin Republic and France when he regains freedom.

The lawyer, who made this known on Friday, further disclosed that Sunday Igboho will not return to Nigeria until the end of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Falola added that the Yoruba rights activist’s continued stay in the Benin Republic is a blessing in disguise, saying, “Igboho’s arrest shows he was cheated because he didn’t commit any criminal offence. He is under Benin Republic’s protection.

“Nigeria did not show up in court or bring up evidence against Igboho. So there are no criminal charges against him. When he leaves prison, he’ll demand asylum from other countries including France, and they will be ready to receive him.”

He added, “So he’ll return back to Nigeria when the administration that is against him leaves office.

“The judges asked him if he had land in Cotonou and he responded that he has a land in Seme. So, there is still danger ahead.

“Igboho’s asylum in Cotonou is for him to stay in the country and do his businesses in the country and also travel to Germany to either live there or to travel to and fro. He’ll use Benin as his new home until Buhari’s tenure is over just for his own safety,” the lawyer said.

EKOHOTBLOG recalls that the 48-year-old activist and his wife were arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.

Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was released after the court found out that she had not committed any offence.

On his part, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

This came after the Beninese court ordered that Sunday Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.

The Yoruba rights activist, who is now seeking asylum in the Benin Republic, is facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence and causing disunity in Nigeria.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that some of the other offences said to have been committed by the activist bordered on illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers, and an attempt to cause civil unrest.

Though currently in detention, the court granted Sunday Igboho access to medical care while his lawyers continue to battle for his release and kick against his extradition to Nigeria.
