Makinde Defies G-5 ‘Curse’, Declared Winner Of Oyo Guber Election

  • Governorship and house of assembly elections held on Saturday in Oyo.

  • The elections, which were largely peaceful, have returned winners in most races.

  • The collation of the results of the governorship election has been completed.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Governor Seyi Makinde has been declared the winner of the Oyo State governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declare him the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

According to Prof Adebayo Simeon, the returning officer for the election, Makinde, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord Party, and others to return elected.

“That Makinde Oluseyi Abiodun of the PDP, having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected by the Returning Officer, Prof Adebayo Simeon on this day 19th of March 2023,” Simeon said.

The governor secured victory in 31 of the 33 LGAs in the state while the APC won two local government areas.

In total, Makinde secured 563,756 votes while Teslim received 256,685 and Adelabu polled 38,757.

The G-5 governors

In the buildup to the election, Makinde’s reelection was thought to be in jeopardy after he joined the G-5—a group of PDP governors that refused to support the party’s presidential nominee, Atiku Abubakar, because they wanted power shift to the southern part of the country.

Without the governor’s support, the PDP lost the presidential election to the APC in his state.

Other members of the G-5 with the exception of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State lost their bid to head to the Nigerian Senate.

However, Makinde, said to be widely popular in Oyo, fended off the challenges, to a landslide victory.
