EKO HOT BLOG reports that the National and State lawmakers in Nigeria are expected to receive a total of ₦49 billion as salaries and allowances.
This revelation was made in a document obtained from the website of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission. The sum of ₦32.60 billion will be spent on the lawmakers at the National level while the remaining ₦16.32 billion will be spent at the State level.
According to the data collated, the salary of the Senate President is ₦2.48 million per year (approximately ₦9.94 million in four years) while that of the Deputy President is ₦2.31 million yearly (approximately ₦9.24 million in four years).
Out of the 19 allowances assigned to the Senate President and his deputy, only five allowances were assigned a specific figure. These allowances include constituency allowance (250% of the basic annual salary), duty tour allowance (₦50,000 per night), Estacode ($1,300 per night), Recess (10% of the basic annual salary), and severance gratuity (300% of the basic annual salary).
The allowance of the Senate President is expected to cost about ₦33.29 million, which includes an annual ₦6.21 million for constituency allowance, annual ₦248,424.25 for recess, and ₦7.45 million for severance gratuity, which is paid at the end of the tenure.
The allowance of the Deputy Senate President is expected to cost about ₦30.94 million, which includes an annual ₦5.77 million for constituency allowance, annual ₦230,916.70 for recess, and ₦6.93 million for severance gratuity.
The salaries of the 107 senators will cost ₦867.3 million, while their allowances will cost ₦7.72 billion. The salaries and allowances of other senators were also mentioned, with only 15 out of the 20 allowances disclosed.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives gets an annual salary of ₦2.48 million (approximately ₦9.91 million in four years), while the Deputy Speaker gets ₦2.29 million (approximately ₦9.15 million in four years).
The allowance of the Speaker is about ₦18.33 million, which includes an annual ₦2.48 million for constituency allowance, an annual ₦247,711 for recess, and ₦7.43 million for severance gratuity. The allowance of the Deputy Speaker was pegged at about ₦17.16 million, which includes an annual ₦2.29 million for constituency allowance, ₦288,703 for recess, and ₦6.86 million for severance gratuity.
Other members of the House of Representatives get ₦1.99 million as basic annual salary (a total of ₦7.94 million in four years) or ₦58.76 million each as allowances. The salaries of the 358 House of Representatives members will cost ₦2.84 billion, while their allowances are estimated at ₦21.04 billion.
The Speaker of a State Assembly will be paid ₦1.64 million (₦6.56 million in four years) as an annual basic salary while the Deputy Speaker gets ₦1.45 million (₦5.8 million in four years). In total, the 36 Speakers will get about ₦59.04 million as an annual basic salary or ₦236.16 million in four years, while the Deputies will get about ₦52.1
