Eko Hot Blog reports that the two-time Olympic gold medalist, who is partnering with Dan Evans, made the decision as he continues to recover from recent back surgery.
Murray, who is set to retire after his fifth Olympic Games, believes the doubles event offers the best chance for another medal.
“I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” said the 37-year-old. “Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”
Murray’s illustrious Olympic career includes gold medals in singles from London 2012 and Rio 2016, along with a silver in mixed doubles with Laura Robson in 2012.
His withdrawal from the singles event means his last singles match was a second-round appearance at Queen’s Club against Jordan Thompson, which he had to leave due to a spinal cyst.
