JUST IN: Seun Kuti Granted Bail

  • Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos.

  • This is in response to the entertainer surrendering himself to arrest following an aggravated assault on a police officer on a highway.

  • The Police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, however requested that the defendant be remanded for a period of 21 days.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a recent development, Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos State. The court has also instructed the police to conclude their investigation into the alleged assault of a policeman within the next 48 hours.

During the court proceedings, the Police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, requested that the defendant be remanded for a period of 21 days.

This, according to the prosecutor, would provide ample time for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prepare the necessary legal advice.

However, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the defense counsel representing Seun Kuti, opposed the prosecutor’s request. Falana argued that he was unaware of any application for remand and urged the court not to detain his client.

Seun Kuti, the son of the renowned music icon Fela Kuti, was arrested following an incident in which he allegedly slapped a police officer after his vehicle was stopped on Third Mainland Bridge.

The court’s decision to grant bail to Seun Kuti provides him with temporary freedom while the investigation continues. The bail conditions set by the court are yet to be disclosed.

With the court’s order, the police now have a limited timeframe of 48 hours to conclude their investigation into the assault. The outcome of their investigation will likely determine the subsequent legal proceedings in the case.

Seun Kuti’s arrest and subsequent court proceedings have garnered significant attention due to his status as a prominent musician and his familial connection to the late Fela Kuti, who remains an influential figure in the music industry.
