JUST IN: Soyinka Calls For Sunday Igboho’s Release

  • Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has called for the release of Sunday Igboho.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has called on the government of the Benin Republic to release the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo fondly known as Sunday Igboho.

Soyinka made the call while speaking with newsmen during an interactive session titled, ‘Sanctions on the loose: Chasing the gnat with a sledgehammer’, in Lagos on Friday.

The Playwright, who called for the release of Sunday Igboho to continue his journey, said the Yoruba rights activist didn’t commit any crime against Nigeria.

Soyinka added that Igboho’s offence was resisting the tyranny of Fulani herdsmen against his people in Oyo State.

EKOHOTBLOG recalls that Sunday Igboho, who gained prominence following an ultimatum he issued to criminal herdsmen in the South-West, was arrested alongside his wife on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.

Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was released after the court found out that she had not committed any offence.

On his part, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

This came after the Beninese court ordered that Sunday Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.

The Yoruba rights activist, who is now seeking asylum in the Benin Republic, is facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence and causing disunity in Nigeria.

However, the Nobel Laureate, on Friday, said, “I refuse to believe that Igboho committed any offence except agitating against Fulani tyranny on his people.

“He peacefully demonstrated his position. I can’t consider that to be decided a criminal. Agitating for secession is not a criminal act as long as it’s done peacefully. You don’t have to criminalise that,” Soyinka said.
