Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has warned against the mass protest against the Nigerian government known as RevolutionNow being staged in the state.
Organisers of the protest had on Sunday assured that the protest would continue nationwide despite the arrest of the convener of RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore.
Mr Sowore, a former presidential candidate, was arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) on Saturday, two days before the commencement of the protests.
In a statement late Sunday by the governor’s media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, Wike dissociated the state from the planned protest.
“Rivers State does not subscribe to what the RevolutionNow protest represents and Rivers State is not part of the protest,” the statement said.
The governor said he had directed security agencies to arrest anybody who would be involved in the protest.
He added that he had also directed local authorities in the state to be on alert and report any ‘illegal gathering’ to security agencies.
The RevolutionNow protest has, however, kicked off in Lagos.
