Eko Hot Blog reports that The United Kingdom has expressed its commitment to support the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in achieving its mandate.
This was revealed during a visit to the Headquarters of MNJTF by British Defence Advisor for Nigeria, Brigadier General Matt Munro, on Monday 3 July 2023.
Brig Gen Munro underscored Britain’s resolve to enhance its strategic partnership with the multinational coalition, underlining the crucial role the task force plays in ensuring regional security and stability. The commitment is expected to significantly boost the operational capacity of the MNJTF.
The British Defence Advisor expressed optimism for the future, voicing confidence that the UK’s backing will facilitate pivotal advancements for the MNJTF, ranging from meticulous planning to proficient execution of operations.
The Force Commander MNJTF Major General Gold Chibuisi, who was represented by the Deputy Force Commander Brigadier General Assoulai Blama, expressed gratitude to the British government for the support it has been receiving through the Cell for Coordination and Liaison to MNJTF, a key conduit for the strategic partnership.
The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) is a combined multinational formation, comprising mostly military units, from Nigeria, Benin, Chad, Niger, and Cameron. It’s headquarter is in N’Djamena, Chad and it’s primary objective is to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency.
Initially established in 1994 under the administration of Sani Abacha, the task force originated as an exclusively Nigerian force with the primary objectives of curbing banditry activities and facilitating unhindered movement along the northern border.
In 1998, the task force underwent expansion to incorporate units from Chad and Niger, with the specific aim of addressing shared security concerns across borders in the Lake Chad region. The task force’s headquarters were subsequently established in the town of Baga, located in Borno State.
The insurgency initiated by Boko Haram emerged in 2009, while jihadist militant groups increasingly posed direct challenges to security forces in the region. Boko Haram and Ansaru stood out as the most active and prominent among these groups.
In April 2012, the MNJTF’s responsibilities were broadened to include counter-terrorism operations, reflecting the evolving security landscape.
