[#EndSARS]: We Went To Lekki Tollgate With Live Bullets – Army
The Nigerian Army says it took live ammunition to Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020.
You will recall that soldiers were dispatched to the tollgate on October 20 to disperse protesters who had used the place as convergence point for the two weeks demonstration against police brutality.
But the soldiers allegedly fired live rounds at the protesters which led to the death of many.
But appearing before the judicial panel the Lagos state government set up to probe the incident on Saturday, Ibrahim Taiwo, commander of the 81 division of the Nigerian Army, said the soldiers went to the protest grounds with live rounds but did not use it on the protesters.
Commenting on the incident while being cross examined by Olumide Fusika, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Taiwo said they were meant for the protection of the army team that was deployed to restore order in the state.
The army commander said while the soldiers who opened fire used blank bullets, their colleagues with live rounds were on ground to protect from suspected hoodlums who fomented trouble.
