JusticeforChima: Court Remands Four Police Officers Over Alleged Torture, Death Of Mechanic
A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded four dismissed police officers allegedly responsible for the death of a Nigerian man identified as Chima Ikwunado.
It was reported some time last year that a machinist identified as Chima was arrested alongside his boys while testing a customers vehicle.
According to the report, Chima was then kept in the police custody where it was alleged that he was tortured to death.
After his death, Nigerians reacted to the news through a tag #justiceforChima, calling out the Nigerian police force to look in the case.
Apparently time has passed since the incident and the police had apprehended the suspected officers before being arraigned in court.
The arraigned officers including; Ayogu Fidelis, Eke Chibuzor, Rose Georgewill and Egbunefu Felix of the Eagle-Crack Squad in Port Harcourt.
They were also accused of attempted murder and assault against four other survived victims of the arrest which they pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Delivering judgement, Chief Magistrate Promise Iroanya presiding over the case, ordered that the accused be remanded in Nigeria Correctional Centre on grounds that the court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the matter.
Iroanya said the case file has been referred to Department of Public Prosecution for advice while the matter was adjourned till 19th of September for trial.
Speaking to newsmen on the case, the counsel to the late Chima Ikwunado, noted that four suspects were arraigned in court instead of seven suspects.
