Opinion: Kamala Harris: It Was All for Her and Many Others
Hillary Clinton became the first woman nominated for President of the United States of America when she won her Democratic Party ticket in 2016 but lost to the current out-going President, Donald Trump. There were lots of speculations, then, as to why she lost the elections and strongest amongst those theories is the fact of her gender. No woman has ever occupied a seat at the White House except as the first lady, which meant that some voters couldn’t conceive a female running the affairs of the strongest country in the world.
The campaign for the rights of women to vote began in the mid-19th century and the women and men who fought for equality of the genders to have a say in what affects their lives had the faith, tenacity and belief that their demand would be met and for a hundred of years, women suffrage went through changes and reviews because of changes in thinking and perception.
The Vice President-elect, Kamala Harris is a fulfillment of the hopes, prayers, desires, blood, sweat and tears of those who began the fight for the equality of the genders paving the way for future campaigns and actions to trail the same line.
Kamala Harris would be, not only the first woman to become a Vice-President in the US, but someone of a black/Asian descent to win the election of that particular seat of office, something that would have been unthinkable a couple of decades ago.
In her acceptance speech, she said that, “while l may be the first woman in this office, l will not be the last. Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities and to the children of our country regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not simply because they’ve never have seen it before.”
The victory of Kamala Harris at the polls along with the President-elect, Joe Biden, paves the way, especially for women that we have what it takes to become the best of who God has already created us to be in our various areas of influence.
Kamala’s win is a win for every woman in whatever geographical space she may occupy, regardless of cultural limitations and norms, she has shown that in so far anyone can believe it, they can achieve it.
