Kano Chief Judge Orders Release of 37 Inmates from Prison

Published

The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, issued an order on Monday to release 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre.

This decision is part of ongoing efforts to alleviate overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.

The Chief Judge’s directive was primarily influenced by two key factors: the deteriorating health conditions of the inmates and their extended periods of detention without trial. Reports indicate that many of those released were suffering from serious health issues that worsened during their time in custody.

Justice Abdu-Aboki emphasized that the lack of adequate medical care within the facility had further endangered their health. “By releasing these individuals, they can seek proper medical attention outside the confines of the custodial facility,” the Chief Judge stated.

Naija News understands that several inmates had been held for extended periods without trial, raising serious concerns about potential violations of their rights. The prolonged detention without formal legal proceedings played a crucial role in their release, as it contradicts established judicial norms.

During a meeting with the released inmates, Justice Abdu-Aboki encouraged them to maintain good conduct and avoid behaviors that could lead to reoffending. To aid in their reintegration into society, each inmate received ₦10,000 for transportation.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, commended the Chief Judge’s initiative, noting that it not only addresses overcrowding but also reflects a compassionate approach to the health and rights of inmates. He praised the Chief Judge’s commitment to improving conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system and ensuring equitable justice.
