EKO HOT BLOG reports that a 25-year-old woman named Rahma Sulaiman has been taken into custody by the Kano State Police Command for allegedly staging the abduction of her own six-year-old daughter, Hafsat Kabiru.
The woman is accused of demanding a hefty ransom of N3 million from her husband, Kabiru Shehu, in a bid to deceive him. The arrest of Sulaiman is part of the police’s ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region.
Additionally, another woman identified as Zainab Rabi’u, aged 45, was also apprehended for orchestrating the kidnapping of her younger brother, Almustapha Bashir. She initially demanded a staggering ransom of N20 million, which later reduced to N5.1 million after negotiations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing held at the Bompai headquarters of the police. CP Gumel revealed that a total of 14 other kidnapping suspects and a drug dealer were also paraded before the media.
Providing further details, CP Gumel stated, “On 8th May 2023, we received a report from Kabiru Shehu of Sharada Quarters, Kano Municipal LGA, stating that his divorced wife, Rahma Sulaiman, informed him that their 6-year-old daughter, Hafsat Kabiru, was missing.
Unknown individuals then contacted her through her mobile phone, demanding a ransom of N3 million. Through our diligent investigation, we were able to rescue the victim in Madobi LGA.
The divorced wife was arrested and confessed to planning the abduction, taking her daughter to a hideout, and making the ransom demand.”
Regarding the second case, CP Gumel explained,
“On 4th April 2023, a resident of Kofar Ruwa Quarters, Dala LGA, Kano State reported that his 6-year-old son, Almustapha Bashir, was kidnapped, with a ransom initially set at N20 million but later negotiated down to N5.1 million.
“In the course of our investigation, the victim was rescued unharmed, and we arrested Zainab Rabi’u, the mastermind and aunt to the victim, as well as Abdurrashid Sa’idu, Hassan Abdullahi, and Ahmed Saleh, who were all accomplices from Sheka Quarters in Kano.
“All suspects have confessed to the crime and will face legal action once the investigation is concluded.”
Furthermore, CP Gumel shared an incident in which a kidnapping attempt led to tragic consequences. “On 16th March 2023, gunmen stormed the residence of Nasiru Yahaya in Yarimawa Village, Tofa LGA, Kano State, intending to abduct him and his son, Gaddafi Nasiru.
During the confrontation, the son resisted, and one of the kidnappers accidentally shot and killed their own colleague, Umar Abdullahi, alias Danbaba. The father managed to escape.
In the chaos, two villagers who came to offer assistance were also shot in the legs. The suspects involved in this crime, Idris Abdullahi, Tukur Yusuf, and Ilyasu Aminu, were subsequently arrested.”
CP Gumel extended his appreciation to the residents of Kano State and the public for their support and cooperation, emphasizing the police’s commitment to working together to enhance internal security and tackle emerging challenges in the state.
