Addressing the media, Lawan stated, “Based on the facts and observations, we cannot substantiate charges of criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire, and culpable homicide against Doguwa.” He further explained that the decision was reached due to insufficient evidence linking Doguwa to the alleged crimes.
During the investigation, contradictory evidence emerged, both implicating and absolving Doguwa. Lawan highlighted the inconsistencies in the statements provided by those who initially implicated Doguwa, and he emphasized the lack of medical evidence to prove the deaths of the victims.
“The statements of those that implicated Doguwa were full of contradictions, and there was no medical evidence to prove the death of the victims,” Lawan pointed out. He concluded by reiterating,
“The law is clear that the allegations that Doguwa killed people cannot be substantiated.”
The Attorney General also disclosed that between eight to twelve suspects had been arrested in relation to the case. These individuals will be charged with mischief by fire under Section 336 of the Penal Code. The Kano State authorities are committed to ensuring that all individuals involved in criminal activities face appropriate legal consequences.
Alhassan Ado Doguwa, a prominent figure in the House of Representatives, expressed gratitude for the clearance of his name and extended his sympathies to the victims and their families. He maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and affirmed his confidence in the justice system.
The resolution of this case has generated mixed reactions among the public, with some expressing relief at the findings, while others raise concerns about the integrity of the investigation process. The Ministry of Justice assured the public that due diligence was exercised, and all available evidence was thoroughly examined before reaching a conclusion.
