Kanu's Family Raises Alarm Over IPOB Leader's Critical Health In DSS Custody

Eko Hot Blog reports that the family of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised serious concerns about his deteriorating health condition while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, revealed that they received information indicating that Kanu is critically ill and urgently requires medical attention from a cardiologist.

Editor’s Pick:

In a statement released on Saturday, Emmanuel appealed to President Bola Tinubu not to allow his brother to die in DSS custody. “We got information this morning that he is critically down. He has not been granted access to his personal doctors, and he urgently needs a cardiologist. He should not be allowed to die in DSS custody,” the statement read.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS custody since 2021 after he was renditioned to Nigeria from Kenya. His bail application based on his deteriorating health condition was denied by Justice Binta Nyako on Tuesday.

The family had previously criticized the political elite in the South-East for their failure to intervene and engage with President Tinubu to help secure Kanu’s release. “How be it that nobody among Igbo political leaders has reached Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release almost a year after he came to power?” the family questioned, alleging that some individuals may be benefiting from Kanu’s continued incarceration.
