Kebbi: Three Police Officers in Custody as Suspect Dies in Cell

- Commissioner of Police Bello Sani ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
- The suspect was arrested for stealing trailer rims
- An autopsy and full investigation are underway.
Kebbi State is reeling in shock and anger following the arrest of three police officers accused of brutally killing a theft suspect in custody in Jega.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the shocking incident on Saturday, revealing that 26-year-old Abubakar Auwal, who was arrested for stealing trailer rims, collapsed under suspicious circumstances just a day after his detention and later died in a hospital.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, Auwal was arrested on April 15. However, by 6:00 a.m. the following morning, he had collapsed inside his cell. Despite being rushed to Jega General Hospital, Auwal succumbed to his injuries by 10:00 p.m. the same day.
In response, Commissioner of Police Bello Sani ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Preliminary investigations allegedly implicated three officers, who are now detained at the SCID. The Divisional Police Officer of the station has also been queried and redeployed.
CSP Abubakar condemned the officers’ actions and emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force would not protect rogue personnel.
“These individuals acted far outside the law,” he said. “Their actions in no way represent the values of the force. Accountability and justice will be served.”
