Eko Hot Blog reports that Super Eagles and Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho has turned down a fresh contract offer from the club amid attention from Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
The 27-year-old forward has only started in ten league matches in the EFL Championships this season.
As Enzo Maresca has favored Zambian Patson Daka to spearhead the attack for the Foxes.
However, Iheanacho, along with Wilfred Ndidi, is nearing the end of their time at Leicester City, with their contracts expiring in June 2024.
While Ndidi aims for a transfer to a top-six Premier League club,.
Kelechi Iheanacho shows little interest in prolonging his tenure at the King Power Stadium.
As per Football Insider, the top-scoring African player in FA Cup history was presented with an enhanced contract featuring a weekly salary of £65,000.
However, the Nigerian striker turned down the proposal.
‘‘He (Iheanacho) has been offered a new deal but not prepared to sign.
“But we will wait till the end of the season and see,’’ the report stated.
Iheanacho’s response could be attributed to various factors, with lack of playing time being the primary concern.
According to Football Fancast, Aston Villa is eyeing the 2021 FA Cup champion as a backup for Ollie Watkins, adding to the speculation.
Under Unai Emery’s guidance, Aston Villa has had a successful season and is aiming for a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Hence, If Iheanacho opts to join Villa, he would have the opportunity to play alongside talented individuals.
Including Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey, Ollie Watkins, and Moussa Diaby.
Note that Aston Villa sees Iheanacho as a seasoned Premier League striker.
Considering him a summer acquisition that could significantly impact their performance next season at Villa Park.
Meanwhile, in 10 starting appearances for Leicester, Iheanacho scored five goals and provided one assist, averaging a goal contribution every two games.
The Foxes have clinched promotion back to the English Premier League after being relegated on the final matchday of the previous season.
