On Tuesday, staff of KFC Nigeria at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, refused entry to Debola Daniel, the son of a former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, because he was in a wheelchair.
In a series of tweets reported by Eko Hot Blog on Wednesday, Daniel said a KFC staff, whom he believed to be the branch’s manager, told him that wheelchairs were not allowed inside the restaurant.
EDITOR’S PICKS
The incident triggered outrage on social media as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) closed the KFC facility on Thursday morning.
In an attempt to apologise to the discrimination victim on Thursday, KFC Nigeria published a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In the statement, the company claimed that it was “unwavering” in its stance against bias or discrimination.
The restaurant further claimed that the discriminatory conduct was “mot reflective of our standards”, but did not say whether there was a policy banning wheelchairs from its facilities as staff claimed.
KFC is unwavering in our stance against bias or discrimination in any form, with inclusivity and respect as non-negotiable pillars of our values.

The statement, which strangely and curiously failed to mention the victim by name, was quickly ripped on X for being devoid of empathy.
A check by Eko Hot Blog on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Content Detector showed that the entire content of the “apology” statement was apparently created using AI.
The AI detector said, “AI Content Detected” and flagged the entire text with a red ink.
The unnatural language of the statement was noticed by some X users, including one Miss Taiwo, who wrote, “‘Unwavering’. ChatGPT, stand upppp.”

The decision of KFC to apparently create an apology statement with an AI tool has called into question its sincerity to deal with its discriminatory policy against people with special needs.

While the apparent AI-generated statement says the company will “urgently” implement inclusion training for all employees, the statement’s lack of authenticity calls KFC’s commitment to root out discriminatory behaviour into question.
