The former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof. Olorunfemi Olaofe, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen, has been found dead.
The retired academic was abducted from his home in Ado-Ekiti on July 9, along with his security guard.
They were taken away in his car, which the police later recovered.
The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million, which was later reduced to N15 million, before communication ceased.
Prof. Femi Oke, President of the Are-Ekiti Progressive Union, announced that Prof. Olaofe’s body was discovered in a shallow grave along the Ekiti Cargo Airport Road. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the untimely death of our Community Leader, Prof. Olorunfemi Olaofe. His body was found in a shallow grave along the Airport road,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adeniran Akinwale, confirmed the death of the former DVC and stated that some suspects connected to the abduction have been arrested. Akinwale expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and the Are-Ekiti community, assuring them that the perpetrators would be apprehended soon.
The police commissioner also noted that there is suspicion of inside involvement, as evidence suggests the security guard employed by Prof. Olaofe may have orchestrated the kidnapping.
