The level of insecurity in Nigeria is on the rise daily, so we must be very cautious. Kidnappers have exploited certain families, extorting millions of Naira in ransom payments. Kidnappers now mostly operate on highways, intending to abduct members of wealthy families. These guys make a living off kidnapping, and we need to know how to avoid falling into their trap.

  1. Be extremely cautious of showing off your cash in public or previous belonging, that could indicate you are wealthy.

Maintain an unostentatious lifestyle and stay avoid wearing too fancy attire (except necessary) to avoid being a target for kidnappers. If you need to make a call in public and it involves business or large sums of money, do so softly, or find a private spot.

  1. Never give strangers or neighbours personal information about your family. It is not a good idea to associate with someone you do not know. Kidnappers are desperate for information, and they may try to obtain it from you.
  2. Don’t post your home and office addresses on social media. Avoid posting pictures, showing your home address or the exact location you work.

Also, don’t post pictures of your kids in their school uniforms on the internet. School uniforms usually have an emblem with the school’s name and address. This could provide information to kidnappers about their children’s whereabouts.

  1. Don’t stick to a particular route. Any kidnapper following your movements will be unable to apprehend you as a result of this. Explore different routes to regular locations, it may sound weird, but it could save you.
  2. Kidnappers are ordinary people like us, thus their features don’t reveal it. Before hiring someone to work as a housemaid, you should conduct thorough background checks. You must know where the maid’s family resides, and they must be represented by a surety.
