Kidnapping, Armed Robbery and Fraud Top FCT Police Command’s 2024 Criminal Cases

In 2024, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command reported the loss of 140 officers in the line of duty. Despite this, the Command was successful in recovering a significant sum of N409,992,000 from various criminal activities.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that the recovered funds, as detailed in the Command’s scorecard, break down as follows: N36,850,000 from kidnapping suspects, N68,552,000 from armed robbery suspects, N19,590,000 from burglary cases, and N285,000,000 from fraud cases.

During this period, 1,426 cases were filed with the Command, leading to the arrest of 1,077 suspects.

The breakdown of these cases, as stated by the FCT Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, shows that fraud was the most reported crime with 385 cases leading to the arrest of 422 suspects. Armed robbery came in second with 268 cases, resulting in 132 arrests.

One-chance robbery followed closely, with 263 reported cases and 71 arrests. Car theft came next, with 127 cases and 64 arrests. Lastly, kidnapping accounted for 104 reported cases, leading to 216 arrests.

In the realm of cybercrime, 32 cases were reported which led to the arrest of 15 suspects.

For homicide, there were 68 reported cases resulting in the arrest of 78 suspects.

In terms of burglary, 73 cases were filed with 20 suspects apprehended. Lastly, 38 cases of cultism were recorded, leading to 59 arrests.

Additionally, the report revealed the recovery of 376 firearms, including 13 AK-47 magazines and 187 rounds of live ammunition.

Vehicle recoveries were also notable. In car theft cases, 73 vehicles were recovered, 24 from one-chance robbery cases, and two from cultism cases.

The report also highlighted a 15.1% decrease in crime incidents in the FCT between 2023 and 2024. Furthermore, 68 kidnapped victims and 19 one-chance robbery victims were rescued.

However, the report disclosed a somber note, stating that 140 police officers tragically lost their lives while on active duty.

On another note, 68 complaints were lodged against members of the command. Although 58 suspects were charged with police misconduct, no convictions were recorded.

On prosecution and convictions secured, the FCT Police Command stated that 38 kidnap suspects were charged to court, with 21 convicted.

“For one-chance robbery, 16 suspects were charged, and 11 were convicted. homicide: 32 suspects charged, eight convicted; fraud: 178 suspects charged, 58 convicted; cultism: 19 suspects charged, 11 convicted; burglary: 26 suspects charged, eight convicted; and car theft: 21 suspects charged, 11 convicted,” the scorecard added.

Highlighting the command’s plans for 2025, Adeh stated that efforts would focus on enhancing community policing and conducting targeted operations.
