Killing Christians Is the Only Crime Left Unpunished – Bishop Kukah

Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto condemned the ongoing persecution of Christians in Northern Nigeria and criticised the lack of accountability for these crimes.

He expressed frustration that despite the repeated violence against the church, no one has been prosecuted for these acts.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Kukah made these remarks virtually during the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria Eko Subordinate Council, held in Lagos. The event was themed: “Christian Martyrdom in Nigeria… a Building Block or Stumbling Block to Salvation or Patriotism.”

He also lamented the ethnic bias that has been associated with the Christian faith in Nigeria, urging an end to such divisive attitudes.

Kukah stated, “In Northern Nigeria, Christians often face violence without repercussions. For example, churches are burned, and Christian properties are destroyed, yet no one is held accountable. A pastor was brutally murdered in Adamawa, priests have been killed in Benue and Kaduna, and it seems that killing Christians is the only act with no consequences.”

He continued, “Christianity has unfortunately become entangled with ethnicity. There is a prevailing mentality that those who are not part of our group are against us. This is evident in Northern Nigeria, where Christians face significant challenges, including being denied land to build churches.”

The bishop emphasized the importance of preaching the gospel regardless of political or ethnic divisions. He reflected on his own experiences of facing threats during the Abacha regime, highlighting that martyrdom is not just about being killed but about standing firm in truth despite severe challenges.

Kukah acknowledged the personal losses he has endured, including the deaths and kidnappings of his seminarian and priests in Sokoto. Despite these trials, he expressed that such adversity only strengthens his resolve.

In his closing remarks, Worthy Grand Knight of the Knights of St. Mulumba Eko Sub Council, Sir Tony Nnachetta, highlighted the faithfulness of the Lord and the sacrifices made by the members of the council for the betterment of their community and future generations.
