Kompany Unleashes Fury On Premier League Referees’ Substandard Performances

Eko Hot Blog reports that in a scathing assessment of the officiating in the Premier League this season, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has lambasted the referees, describing their performances as not being “good enough.” His comments come in the wake of a contentious match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, March 30, where he was shown a red card for protesting a penalty decision, and his defender Lorenz Assignon was also sent off.

Despite playing the entire second half without their coach on the sideline and a man down, Burnley displayed resilience, coming from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw against the Blues. However, Kompany’s frustration with the refereeing standards was palpable as he voiced his concerns ahead of Burnley’s Premier League clash against Wolves on Tuesday.
“I’ve said it to the referees themselves – refereeing hasn’t been good enough this season,” Kompany stated. “And I have said that constructively, understanding as well the fact it’s not easy for them. The scrutiny is massive. The pressure is bigger than it’s ever been on the officials. The addition of VAR and more opinions and more officials doesn’t make it easy for them to do their jobs.”
Acknowledging the complexities of the role, Kompany expressed empathy for the officials but stressed the need for consistency and fairness throughout the season. “You make a mistake and we all have a laugh about it and usually the traditional view is that it all evens itself out throughout a season. This year I haven’t felt like this. Where we are in the league doesn’t really matter. I just want it to be right.”
Burnley currently finds themselves in a precarious position, sitting in 19th place, four points away from safety. However, Kompany’s ire towards the refereeing standards transcends league standings, as he advocates for a more equitable and transparent system that upholds the integrity of the game.
