Kudirat Kekere-Ekun: New Chief Justice, Biography, Career Highlights
Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun CFR, widely known as Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, is a distinguished Nigerian jurist who has been serving as the Chief Justice of Nigeria since 22 August 2024, following the retirement of Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
She was sworn in today, 23 August 2024. marking a significant moment in Nigeria’s judicial history.

Born on 7 May 1958 in London, United Kingdom, Kekere-Ekun began her academic journey in law at the University of Lagos, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1980. She then attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar on 10 July 1981.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Her pursuit of legal excellence continued at the London School of Economics, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Law in November 1983.
Kekere-Ekun’s legal career began in the Lagos State Judiciary, where she joined as a Senior Magistrate II.
Her dedication and expertise quickly led to her appointment as a High Court Judge in Lagos State. From November 1996 to May 1999, she served as the Chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal, Zone II, in Ikeja.
In 2004, she was appointed to the Nigerian Court of Appeal, and in July 2013, she became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Notably, in 2020, she was part of the seven-member panel that ruled on the controversial Imo State governorship election, declaring Hope Uzodinma as the rightful winner.
