Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is collaborating with Stagecraft Studios and Film Production Ltd. to present the theatrical production ‘Kurunmi’ this weekend.
The announcement of this partnership was made by the State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, during a press briefing held recently at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka emphasized the government’s initiative to collaborate with the production company to bring ‘Kurunmi’ to life as part of its efforts to celebrate historical heritage and safeguard African culture and traditions from fading away.
She also highlighted the importance of inspiring young people to understand the significance of responsible leadership in their communities.
Written by the esteemed playwright Prof. Ola Rotimi, ‘Kurunmi’ delves into themes such as the supremacy of tradition, the dynamics of social change, and the principles of accountable leadership.
Featuring an impressive ensemble of 75 actors and crew members, the play will be performed at the Terra Kulture Arena on the weekend of September 28 and 29.

Stagecraft Productions is behind the production, with direction by the acclaimed filmmaker and actor, Mr. Oladapo Muyideen, affectionately known as Lala.
Supporting this initiative is FirstBank, through its First@arts program, which aims to elevate the arts, safeguard cultural heritage, and create avenues for artistic expression.
In a statement released by the bank, it was noted that the play is set against the backdrop of the Yoruba kingdom of Oyo, chronicling the story of Kurunmi, a military leader and general grappling with both internal conflicts and external pressures from imperialist forces, particularly the Fulani invaders.
“Kurunmi is not only a powerful piece of literature but also a significant contribution to African drama,” the bank remarked.
Additionally, Nigerian Breweries Plc is among the sponsors, with its Goldberg beer symbolizing the brand’s deep-rooted ties to the cultural identity of its audience.
The performances are set to welcome the public on Saturday and Sunday, with showtimes at 3 PM and 6 PM.
