La Liga Bans Use Of The Term ‘El Clasico’

  • Real Madrid and Barcelona to stop using the term ‘El Clasico’ in marketing promotions for fixtures between both clubs.

  • This is in response to a ruling by the Patent and Trademark Office in Spain.

  • The term as stated creates confusion when marketed by La Liga as football fans believe it to refer to the fixture between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Spanish La Liga body has banned the use of the term ‘El Clasico’ for marketing purpose by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

This is as a result of both clubs trying to trademark the term for games between them, which was reportedly denied by the Patent and Trademark Office in Spain.

The term ‘El Clasico’ has so far come to be known for fixtures between Real Madrid and Barcelona, be it La Liga fixtures or not, however, according to reports, the term puts itself in direct clash with La Liga itself who uses the term, ‘el clasico’ for promoting league matches.

Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona and Benzema of Real Madrid

Relevo reports that neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid will be able to use the term anymore to market the fixture as there stands the risk of confusion when being marketed by the League.

According to Forbes, the Patent and Trademark Office argued that the two clubs trademarking El Clasico would lead to an association between that, and La Liga’s long-standing trademark, hence their denial.
With Barcelona and Real Madrid prevented from trademarking and using the term ‘El Clasico’ to market the hostilities between them, it will be quite difficult for football fans to see the fixture as anything other than ‘el clasico’, a fixture that has so far represented the entity of Spanish club football.
