La Liga: Modric Sets Real Madrid Record In Win Over Celta Vigo
Luka Modric, at 39, became Real Madrid’s oldest-ever player in their La Liga win over Celta Vigo on Saturday.
The Croatian midfielder came off the bench in the second half and assisted Vinicius Jr’s decisive goal, steering his team to a hard-fought victory.

The win brings Real Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table, although they trail on goal difference, having played one game more.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti called Modric a “top professional and a great guy”.
“It’s a pleasure to coach Modric, to work with him. Everything he’s been able to achieve and is achieving, he deserves,” Ancelotti told Real Madrid TV.
Real Madrid took an early lead in just 20 minutes through a brilliant long-range effort from Kylian Mbappé. After receiving a pass from Eduardo Camavinga, Mbappé controlled the ball and whipped it into the top corner, leaving the Celta Vigo goalkeeper helpless.
Despite going ahead, Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to assert dominance, with Celta creating several clear chances. Williot Swedberg had a golden opportunity to score before Mbappé’s opener, but missed the target when one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid’s defence appeared shaky, and Celta regularly threatened on the counter-attack. Their persistence paid off just five minutes into the second half, as Swedberg slotted home after Oscar Mingueza’s low cross into the box.
Vinícius Jr. thought he had quickly restored Real’s lead, but his goal was disallowed for offside, mirroring Borja Iglesias’ earlier disallowed effort for Celta after Mbappé’s strike.

However, Vinícius found the net 10 minutes later, converting Luka Modrić’s perfectly weighted pass to put Real Madrid back in front. Vicente Guaita was unable to stop the Brazilian’s composed finish.
Ancelotti expressed satisfaction with the hard-fought win, stating, “I’m happy because we won after the international break, which is not always easy.”
Real Madrid now shift focus to their Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at 20:00.
