Abia Police Clarify Labour Party Leader's Arrest
The Anambra State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has announced its decision to pursue legal action and formally declined to endorse the upcoming local government elections scheduled for September 28.
During a weekend press conference, the party’s state working committee informed journalists of their intent to challenge what they described as a hasty amendment of the state electoral laws by the House of Assembly, allegedly under the directive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Labour Party stated, “The trending matter of the moment, as we all know, is the proposed forthcoming Anambra State Local Government elections.”
Expressing their concerns, the party noted, “As much as the State House of Assembly did not make any budgetary provisions for the proposed Council Election, we are shocked and at a loss as to the speed of amendments upon amendment of the State Electoral Law, even extending into the wee hours of the night.”
According to the Labour Party, the amendments were made under pressure, as the governor risks losing the monthly Local Government Fund Allocations to a holding account if the election is not conducted before October 2024, as ruled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
After carefully reviewing the amended electoral law, the Labour Party resolved to approach the court to challenge specific clauses they find objectionable.
The party emphasized that they are prepared to participate in the election, provided that the correct and lawful procedures are followed, and pending the outcome of ongoing judicial proceedings.
The LP leadership in the state added, “We will approach the court to challenge some of the obnoxious clauses in the hastily amended laws.
“We as a party are getting prepared to participate in the election once the right and lawful things are done and without prejudice to the outcome of the judicial proceedings pending before the court.”
