EKO HOT BLOG reports In a remarkable achievement, the Nigeria Customs Service at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport Command revealed it successfully collected N90.4 billion in duties and charges during the year 2023, demonstrating a significant increase from the previous year.

Addressing journalists at the Lagos command, Area Controller Muhammad Yusuf highlighted the substantial progress, emphasizing a 29.61% surge in collections compared to the previous year, showcasing the dedication of the command’s officers.

However, Yusuf disclosed that the ambitious revenue target for 2024 had been set at N144 billion, signaling the continued commitment of the customs service to fiscal policies and trade guidelines.

Deployed to head the MMIA Command after serving as the coordinator of the now-defunct CGC Strike Force, Yusuf credited the impressive 2023 achievements to the unwavering determination of the command’s officers.

Throughout the year, the command made ten significant seizures, including items such as tramadol, military camouflage jackets, military hardware, counterfeit medicaments, dried shark fins, and dried donkey genitals, with a total duty paid value of N47.2 billion.

These seizures resulted from various infractions, encompassing false declarations, non-compliance with estimated thresholds, and failure to adhere to other regulations outlined in the Nigeria Customs Service Act.

Yusuf highlighted the command’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration, as many seized items were handed over to concerned sister agencies, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation.

Maintaining an open-door policy, the command successfully resolved numerous issues of common interest with stakeholders, further solidifying its role in enforcing government fiscal policies and trade guidelines.
