The executive Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to restructure Lagos Island.
The Governor disclosed this as he visited the Balogun market scene of the fire incident which occurred last week, adding that, the move became necessary to prevent further fire outbreak.
Sanwo-Olu noted that top on the priority list for the rebirth was the commencement of integrity test on all building in the Central Business District(CBD) on Lagos Island and utilization of abandoned high-rise building for commercial use in order to reduce street trading.
While planning on this development, Sanwo-olu called for support to the families and properties owner who may be affected.
He said “We also have abandoned high-rise buildings on the Island and we have done audit of all these buildings. We need to have conversation with the owners on how we can put the abandoned property to better use.
“There are a lot of traders who wish to take away their wares from the road and occupy these abandoned building. We need to talk the owners and reach an agreement on a scheme that would make traders use the abandoned property.”
He also revealed his plan to construct the phase II of Oluwole Mordern Market to eradicate street trading and future fire and other hazards associated with trading.
In addition, he disclosed of his planned meeting with the local government chairmen on market allocation.
Meanwhile, the governor frowned at careless attitude of traders usage of heavy generating set on the roof top of multi-story building in the market warning that there will be enforcement of structural code for safety.
Sanwo-Olu promised that the Government would hasten up its discussion with electricity distribution companies for regular power supply to markets.
The Governor pledged his administration’s support to traders whose goods were destroyed by the fire.
