  • The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to commence strict enforcement of COVID-19 protocols in the state.

The house made the resolution sequel to a motion by the acting Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hakeem Sokunle (Oshodi/Isolo 1) over the new wave of COVID-19 in the state.

Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, noted that the state, just like the country, could not afford another lockdown because of the adverse effect it would have on the economy.

Obasa said with the dreadful dimension of the second wave of COVID-19 in the state and country, there was need for more enlightenment.

He noted that the life of every individual in Lagos State remained precious and as such, there must be conscious effort to protect residents.

Earlier in his submission, Sokunle said the motion was important following outright disregard for the protocols against the pandemic by many residents and visitors to the state.

“The house should urge the governor to call on the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotoso to embark on enlightenment campaigns to the people concerning the dangerous effects of the pandemic.

“It is evident that before now, only few patients needed oxygen. The situation has changed with over 80 per cent of patients now needing oxygen.

“Apart from the enlightenment, there should be strict compliance with the COVID-19 protocols as well as cancelling all social engagements,” he said.

He also said wearing of face masks should be enforced.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other lawmakers took turns to express their views on the issue during plenary.

The motion was passed by the speaker through voice vote.
