Brace For Downpours: Lagos Braces For Above-Average Rainfall In 2024

• Lagos State projected to experience 1936.2mm of rainfall, exceeding long-term average

Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagosians are being advised to prepare for a wetter-than-usual rainy season, as the Lagos State Government announced on Tuesday that the state is expected to experience above-normal rainfall during the 2024 rainy season, with a predicted total of 1936.2mm.

Speaking at a media briefing on the Seasonal Climate Predictions and its Socio-Economic Implications for Lagos State, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, stated, “The average annual rainfall amount predicted for 2024 is 1936.2mm, which is greater than the long-term average of 1721.48mm, with the onset date expected to be the first week of April and ceasing in the first week of December.”

Wahab provided a breakdown of the rainfall projections for various areas within the state, noting that Ikeja is anticipated to receive 1900mm, with the onset date of April 4 and cessation on December 4. Badagry is expected to record 1978mm, with the onset on April 1 and cessation on December 5, while Ikorodu is projected to receive 1903mm, commencing on April 4 and ending on December 4.

Furthermore, Lagos Island is expected to experience 1936mm of rainfall, with the onset on April 3 and cessation on December 4, and Epe is projected to receive 1952mm, with the onset on April 2 and cessation on December 5.

“Below-normal rainfall amounts are anticipated in the first half of the rainy season, while normal to above-normal rainfall amounts are expected in the second half of the rainy season,” Wahab noted.

In light of these projections, the Commissioner emphasized the state government’s preparedness and urged residents to remain calm while supporting the government’s efforts.

“The government had put all emergency response organisations, traffic management organisations, and other emergency-related organisations on high alert to help lessen the detrimental effects of thunderstorms and associated rains in the State,” he stated.

The Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, appealed to residents to support the government’s efforts by regularly cleaning drains in their frontages to ensure the free flow of stormwater and desisting from dumping refuse into drainage channels.
