Lagos Chief Judge Inaugurates LG Elections Appeal Tribunal (Photos)

  • Lagos Chief Judge has inaugurated LG Elections Appeal Tribunal in the state.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that the Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, has inaugurated the Local Government (LG) Elections Appeal Tribunal to hear petitions from the LG Elections, which took place on July 24, 2021.

Justice Alogba, while speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Ikeja High Court, said the creation of the Elections Appeal Tribunal is one of the constitutional provisions for carrying out Local Government Elections in the state and is pursuant to the Election Petitions Law.

He further stated that two tribunals will be set up, one to sit at the Ikeja High Court and the other at the High Court Annex located at the Central Business District, Alausa, Lagos, to consider the Appeals of aggrieved candidates who participated in the elections.

He said, “I have carefully thought about all the antecedents of the five Lagos State High Court Judges we are putting forth today. I am deeply satisfied with their integrity, hard work, impartiality, and their honour concerning justice delivery

“It is a task you are called upon to do for the sake of integrity. The judiciary is not a money-making arm of government. The task you are asked to perform is to further cement the relationship with the citizens of the State,” the Lagos Chief Judge stated.

Charging the Elections Appeal Tribunal judges to be just in their adjudication, Alogba noted that the Tribunal is the last hope of citizens who are dissatisfied with the results of the LG elections as there will be no further appeals.

Justice Morenike Obadina, the Chairman of the Lagos State Local Government Elections Appeal Tribunal, who spoke on behalf of other members of the Tribunal after taking the oaths of office, expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to her and the other judges to serve on the Tribunal.

She said, “I want to pledge that we are going to do all that is within our power to work expeditiously on all the cases that will come before the Tribunal and work within the timeframe as mandated by law”.

“I want to assure my lord, the Chief Judge, and the good people of Lagos State that the wish of Lagosians will be fulfilled,” Justice Obadina stated.

Other members of the Tribunal include Justice Beatrice Oke-Lawal, Justice Olubunmi Fadipe, Justice Wasiu Animashaun, and Justice Jubril Bashua.

The event was attended by Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Lagos State, judges, and members of the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, among others.
