Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Thursday that public sector employees will shift to part-time schedules to help residents cope with the cost of living crisis.

“We want to start with our public servants, immediately from next week,” Sanwo-Olu said during a media briefing on economic hardship. “Civil servants from the lower level will be working like three times a week and level 15-17 can work four times in a week.”

The governor also aims to make food more affordable, stating “We will open Sunday Markets in at least 42 identified markets across Lagos State. You will be able to buy food items at a discounted price. You will only be able to buy items worth up to N25,000.”

Additionally, Sanwo-Olu noted a 25% reduction on public transport fares will begin this weekend on the Bus Rapid Transit system, train, and ferry services. His administration is in talks with transport unions to lower fares as well.

“First is to express empathy with our citizens. We are not unmindful of the situation, as leaders, we must be able to solve socioeconomic problems,” the governor remarked.

Sanwo-Olu challenged the private sector to follow the model of assistance they provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. The measures aim to ease the burden of rising costs and economic hardship facing Lagos residents.
