The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in bus fares under its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI).

The new prices will start on Monday, February 17, across all routes.

LAMATA explained in a statement on its X page that the increase is due to high operating costs and the need to keep buses running for public transportation in Lagos.

However, many Lagos residents are unhappy with the decision. They question why LAMATA has not switched to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce costs.

A user, @EnitanOyekanm, asked why the CNG conversion program has not been implemented, saying it could lower fuel costs significantly. The user also wondered about the status of the 100 electric buses the government promised.

Another user, @Mudaoye2013, criticized the government, saying Lagosians continue to suffer despite the state’s high revenue. He also questioned why the state has not taken control of the money collected by road transport unions.

Similarly, @dipeckx pointed out that diesel prices have dropped, yet LAMATA claims costs are rising. He called the promises of electric and CNG buses a “scam.”
