EKO HOT BLOG reports that a fire accident that destroyed a couple’s two-room apartment on Tapa Road, Oke-Oko, Isawo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, resulted in the death of four children and has left them inconsolable.
The couple identified as Chukwudi and Bolani Michael lost one of the children, Jeremiah, a 12 years old boy in the incident which happened at 1 pm on Sunday, June 26.
The three other siblings, Prayer, 18; Trust in God, 14; and Ebube, 10, all suffered severe burns and were taken to the hospital, where they all died a few days later.
The couple’s eight-year-old daughter, Esther, who escaped the accident was said to have slept in a different room.
Narrating the incident, the father of the victims, Chukwudi, said he was awakened by one of his children screaming for help.
He said: “After waking up, I alerted neighbours who helped me to break the windows of the boys because their door was locked. We were able to rescue three of the boys from the fire, but one had already been burnt to death. We rushed them immediately to a hospital with the help of a neighbour’s car, but we eventually lost them.”
He noted that men of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service only came in the morning after the fire had been put out by neighbours.
However, the state fire service’s public education officer, Amodu Shakiru, claimed that firefighters stopped the fire and added that five people were saved.
He said: “We rescued five persons and recovered the burnt body of a teenager.”
The couple said they had no idea how the fire started as anything that could start the fire had been put off.
